Annie, who called herself Madam Dupris, shuffled the tarot cards and laid them out just like her grandmother had taught her. She pushed the four of pentacles towards her customer and closing her eyes, she read the woman’s fortune. “You have accomplished many of your goals,” she said.

“Yes! I have! How did you know?”

“The cards see all,” Annie said.

“What else can you see, Madam Dupris?”

“When it comes to love, however,” Annie said with a smile.

“What?”

Annie frowned. “Well, you are a clingy lover and I see you are still in love with your ex…”

The woman nodded. “I can’t believe he left me! Will I get him back?”

“Only if you let go of your jealousy.” Annie smiled. “Do not be afraid to let your lover go, for if they loved you, they will surely come back.”

The woman nodded. “Yeah? What if he’s with someone else?”

“Let go of your past, change your ways, and a new love will find its way into your heart.”

“Okay… And my job? Will I lose it? The economy’s been bad and all.”

Annie shook her head. “Why are you so worried about a job you hate?’

“It pays well and…” The woman frowned.

“Let go of your insecurities, my dear, and things will get better. That house you want, that fancy car, they will come. Do not worry about being so frugal. There are great rewards in your future.”

The woman leaned forward and patted Annie’s hand. “Thanks, Madam Dupris!”

“Bye…” Annie watched her go. They were all the same; all they wanted to know was will they be rich and will they find love. She sighed and shuffled the cards. Laying them out, she decided to read her own fortune. Annie closed her eyes and moved her hand to the middle of the deck. She pushed out a card. “Interesting…” she murmured to herself when she saw that she had picked Death. She sensed a familiar presence. “What are you trying to tell me, Granny?” Annie knew the card did not literally mean death, but something about it shook her in a way she found hard to describe. She gathered the cards together and put them in her pouch, before blowing out the candles. Placing the goat’s skull on the shelf, she left the parlor, lost in thought about what felt like a message from beyond the grave.
