Vampire parties always made Wyett nervous. He could never quite figure out why. It wasn't like any of Hetty's friends had been hostile to him or that he was the only non-vampire there. Maybe it was that he was the only werewolf? As far as he knew the werewolf vs vampire vendetta was just something humans had made up for entertainment, but maybe it was being outnumbered by much older, superior predators that had him on edge.
He looked up at the balcony were Hetty and a couple of her friends were talking. The theme of the evening was to dress up as your favorite time period. Hetty had dressed up as a flapper, and apparently so had a couple of others. Wyett watched them laugh and suddenly break out into a short little dance.
Wyett was decked out in dayglow. He really didn't remember the 80's, but he was technically alive in the 80's, so as far as he was concerned, it counted. It also reminded him how young he was compared to everyone else. Most of the crowd had decades on him, many decades, his Hetty included. She had centuries. Moments like that made him concerned. How many more “Wyetts” had there been before him? How many will there be after him? Was she using him for his youth and his ability to go out in the daylight?
He didn't really think she was using him. Sometimes he couldn't help but wonder if it was even possible to really know someone that was three-hundred years older than you. It was more life experience than he could really fathom. Did time even mean anything to someone that old and potentially immortal?
Which brought up the bigger question, why were vampires even having a New Year's Eve party? It didn't mean anything to them. Most of the conversations he overheard were about how stupid a holiday it was. Wasn't it dangerous to have them all in one spot? Maybe having it during a major holiday was more inconspicuous? Any other questions he might have had died when he looked at Hetty again. Vampires were largely solitary creatures. Things like this were one of the few times she saw others like her. It was easy to forget she even had friends. And making the event camera free, meant they didn't have to disguise themselves. They could be free in a way that was becoming increasingly impossible in the modern world.
And few had gotten to be as old as Hetty, fewer still where older. Wyett could hear the whispers about who was missing and what had happened to them. Most just couldn't cope with the changing world.
So maybe parties were necessary. Community was necessary, even if you were a mostly solitary creature and especially if you were disappearing.
And maybe Hetty was using him, but they cared for and about each other. Wasn't that the important thing?
He hadn't seen Hetty move when she tapped his shoulder from behind. It was unnerving when she did that.
“Dance with me?” She peered up at him with her red-grey eyes, so rarely seen without colored contacts disguising them, batting her eyelashes.
“I'm not sure I know any of your weird old timey moves.”
“Funny,” she snarked back with an eyeroll. There was his Hetty.
He took her hand in his and put his other around her waist. They twirled ungracefully around room while Will you still love me when I'm no longer young and beautiful... played along.
