The dragon flew to the old castle. He perched on top of the ruined north tower and let out a loud screech. He crawled through the remains of a window, and spreading his wings, he glided down to rest upon a mountain of jewels. He rolled in them like dog, grumbling contentedly to himself. If there was one thing dragons loved more than princesses, it was gemstones.
Diamonds, jasper, onyx, opals, rubies, sapphires, emeralds… you name it, the dragon probably had it. He even had shards of sea glass and both fresh and salt water pearls. Amongst the horde of jewels were the bones of princesses past and present as well as those belonging to those foolish enough to try and rescue the many damsels in distress. Such tasty treats!
The dragon rolled over and lifted his head. Tendrils of smoke rose from his nostrils as he looked around his lair. Feeling puckish, he grumbled deep with his throat. He supposed he could go out and harass the shepherds on the hill and help himself to a couple of sheep. The dragon thought it over. If he made a big enough pest of himself, they might shower him with jewels again, or if he was really lucky, he might even get a princess. Spreading his wings, the dragon got up and flew to his perch on top of the north tower. Letting out an ear shattering roar, he took flight.
The dragon flew over the village, terrorizing the villagers and setting random buildings and trees on fire. Flying close to the ground, the dragon snatched a fat villager. Tossing the old woman up in the air, the dragon opened his mouth and swallowed her whole. He let out a loud smoky belch as he made his way to hills. Once there, the dragon helped himself to a few sheep, before chasing the rest along with the frightened shepherds. He took no notice of the barking dogs as he ate another sheep. The dragon flew off, his belly full for the moment, with thoughts of pretty princesses dancing him his head.
He woke the next morning, hoping to find a princess or a nice new shiny pile of jewels. The dragon crawled up the tower wall and looked out the remains of the window. Down below was the usual pile of jewels and a princess. However, she was not your typical princess. The dragon was pleased to see she had a lot of meat on her bones and that she was somewhat feisty in nature, if the fist she shook at him was any indication. He blew a plume of smoke at her and the princess coughed and sputtered at him. The dragon could not wait to eat her. He crawled closer, and opening his mouth, he gobbled her up. A contented belch later, the dragon scooped up the jewels in his claws and flew back to his lair. He arranged the gems in a mound and settled back to take a nap. Being a dragon was hard work, but he would not give it up for all the pearls in the sea and then some.
